ELLA SRI LANKA 🇱🇰 is Beautiful! Kandy to Nuwara Eliya & Sri Lanka Train Ride

Join us as we explore the town of Ella, a popular tourist destination in beautiful Sri Lanka. 🇱🇰

After spending a lovely time in Kandy, Sri Lanka, and exploring the wonders of Sigiriya, we decided to break up the 7-hour train ride trip to Ella by driving halfway to Nuwara Eliya.

We also arranged for our driver to continue on to Ella so that we could enjoy the train without any luggage!

In the comfort of a spacious shuttle, traveling was delightful and we made a few stops along the way. We really enjoyed the scenery that was absolutely spectacular - smiling faces, beautiful homes, and amazing nature. It felt like the entire place was covered in tea plantations too.

Navigating the roads in Sri Lanka can be a challenge. Our driver was so careful and we really enjoyed our time together. If you are in need of his services, don’t hesitate to let us know and we’ll send you his contact information.

Four hours after leaving Kandy, we arrived at the little mountain town of Nuwara Eliya.

At the train station, we bought five available tickets for only $5 but they had no reserved seating. Luckily, we met a man selling his 1st class tickets just before boarding, which we bought allowing us to sit comfortably along the ride. Calling the train crowded would be an understatement!

The ride was stunning. The train moved pretty slow so we had lots of time to capture some epic photos while still being careful not to fall off the train.

Arriving in Ella, it was clear this was a popular tourist town with countless backpackers, rows of tuk-tuk drivers, and plenty of tasty-looking restaurants to choose from.

Just 3km from the train station was our accommodation for the next few days, Ella Deck.

The place was amazing! Since we arrived at night, it was a little hard to see how nice it was, but the morning told a completely different story. When in Sri Lanka, don’t hesitate to contact them at https://www.elladeck.com/

On day 2 we enjoyed a delicious breakfast by the pool that looked so inviting under the sun, but we had a lot more to see and do..

Chantal and Julia loved the train so much that they decided to start the day with another short ride from Ella to Haputale. However, the trip that was supposed to take one hour, due to massive delays and frequent stops, took over 3 hours!

Meanwhile, the rest of us were waiting for them at a local restaurant in Ella. We were all hungry by the time they arrived but the delicious burgers and salads were definitely worth the wait.

In the afternoon, we decided to go on a hike to Little Adams Peak and rented a tuk-tuk to take us halfway up. From there we continued our hike to the top and along the way saw people zip lining and a Foot Spa with the most amazing vistas.

Rest assured, the view from the top of the mountain was worth every step we took. From Little Adams Peak we could even see our hotel and the pool calling us to return.

For dinner, we had Mexican food- Sri Lankan style!

Day 3 started with a nice cup of hot coffee on the deck enjoying the breathtaking scenery. Who would have thought that Sri Lanka was so beautiful!

After a filling breakfast, we returned to the town to hike to the Nine Arch Bridge - one of the most popular train-related activities in the whole of Sri Lanka. You can only imagine how Instagramable this place was!

Then we walked back to town and made one last stop in Ella before heading out for Galle and our next adventure in Sri Lanka.

Ella is truly a gem and we can’t wait to return one day.

We hope you’ll enjoy the video and get a chance to visit Sri Lanka in person!
