Exploring Basel, Switzerland: A Journey Through History, Art, and Culture

Hey guys! Today we are taking you to Basel, Switzerland’s third-most-populous city (after Zurich and Geneva). Basel is full of history, beautiful architecture, and fun things to explore, so we couldn’t wait to dive into this adventure!

A Scenic Start to Our Basel Adventure

Our trip to Basel started with a scenic three-hour train ride. Even though we had to change trains twice, we didn’t mind at all because the stunning Swiss landscapes kept us entertained the entire time. The train was quite crowded, but the views more than made up for it!

Where We Stayed: Essential by Dorint

Once we arrived in Basel, we checked into our hotel, the Essential by Dorint. We were thrilled to have two comfortable rooms that were perfect for our stay. Basel was already feeling like the perfect place to explore!

Discovering Old Town Basel

One of the perks of running a travel channel is getting to collaborate with tourism boards and agencies, like the Basel Tourism Board. They hooked us up with pouches full of guides and brochures, and we even had a personal guide to take us on a walking tour around Old Town Basel. The architecture here is just stunning! One of the standout landmarks we visited was the Basel Town Hall, also known as the Rathaus.

Fun Facts About Basel
  • Did you know that Basel has a unique tradition of swimming in the Rhine River? Locals use special waterproof bags, called Wickelfisch, to float their belongings while they drift along the river. It’s such a fun way to cool off in the summer heat!
  • The Basel Botanical Garden, founded in 1589, is one of the oldest in the world and a hub for rare and exotic plants.

Reuniting and Celebrating in Basel

After our walking tour, we headed back to the city center to meet Angelique, who had just finished her coding camp in London. She had quite an eventful flight, so she was extra happy to reunite with us! To celebrate, we had a wonderful lunch at the Walliser Kanne Restaurant, a place with an 80-year-long tradition of serving up delicious Swiss food.

Immersing in Art and Nature

The next day, we visited the Foundation Beyeler Art Museum, where we enjoyed some incredible works of art. We then took a boat ride on the Rhine River and—get this—walked straight into Germany! It’s amazing how easy it is to cross borders in Europe. We finished the day with some tasty Mexican food (yes, in Basel!) and had a great time.

A Blend of Modern Fun and Historical Charm

Later that night, we caught the “Barbie” movie, and the girls absolutely loved it. We all agreed that Margot Robbie was perfect for the role! On our last day, we explored the Basel Botanical Garden, which is filled with rare and exotic plants from around the world. One of the highlights of our trip was climbing the Basel Minster Towers. The view from the top was breathtaking, though the narrow stairs make it a bit of a challenge—not for the faint of heart!

Wrapping Up Our Basel Adventure

We wrapped up our time in Basel with a Mediterranean dinner while enjoying a beautiful sunset. It was the perfect way to end our adventure in this stunning city. Basel left us with so many unforgettable memories, and we can’t wait to share even more of them with you.
