Situated on the French-German border, Strasbourg is one of Europe’s prettiest cities. A popular stop on Rhine cruises, it is actually a couple of miles from the Rhine, on an island in a tributary, the River Ill.
From the compact and walkable centre, the cathedral’s 465ft spire rises like an exclamation mark. Around it are grand squares dotted with statues and cobbled streets lined with half-timbered houses.
