TOKYO JAPAN 🇯🇵❤️ OLD MEETS NEW – FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Hi guys, today we are taking you on Part 2 of our Tokyo adventure, packed with even more unique experiences and sights in one of the world's most bustling metropolises!
Navigating Tokyo's Busy Metro and Business District
Our journey kicked off in the crowded veins of Tokyo's metro. The sheer volume of people was a marvel in itself, truly an experience unique to Tokyo. Did you know that Tokyo’s metro system is one of the busiest in the world, with over 8 million passengers daily? We navigated to Tokyo's business district, sharing fun facts about Japan's royal family, its innovative earthquake preparedness (Tokyo experiences over 1,500 earthquakes a year!), and more as we walked and talked our way to our first destination.
Finding Peace at the Meiji Shrine
Our first stop was the serene Meiji Shrine, an oasis in the middle of the city. The peaceful gardens and spiritual atmosphere provided a perfect escape from the urban hustle and bustle. This shrine is dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken and is surrounded by a 170-acre forest with over 120,000 trees donated from all over Japan. But even adventurers like us sometimes crave a taste of the familiar, so we enjoyed some delicious ice cream at an unexpected spot—IKEA!
Exploring Takeshita Street's Youth Culture
Next, we dove into the vibrant heart of Tokyo's youth culture on Takeshita Street. The explosion of colors, smells, and sounds greeted us, offering an immersive experience of the latest trends and youthful energy that defines this area. Takeshita Street is known for its quirky shops, trendy fashion, and delicious street food. It’s a must-visit for anyone looking to experience Tokyo’s vibrant youth culture.
A Unique Grocery Shopping Experience
Grocery shopping in Japan proved to be an adventure of its own. The stores were packed with unique finds that you wouldn't see anywhere else in the world, like square watermelons and melon-flavored KitKats. And speaking of unique, Tokyo's fashion scene did not disappoint, with bold and creative styles everywhere we looked.
A Futuristic Coffee Break
In a fun twist, our coffee break featured a robotic barista, adding a futuristic touch to our caffeine fix. Watching our coffee being prepared by a robot was surreal, blending Tokyo's love for technology with our quest for the perfect cup of coffee. Fun fact: Japan has one of the highest densities of robots in the world, with robots being used in everything from manufacturing to customer service.
The Iconic Shibuya Crossing
Our exploration then led us to the iconic Shibuya Crossing, the heartbeat of Tokyo. Standing amidst the ocean of people crossing from all directions, we felt the vibrant energy of the city encapsulate us. Shibuya Crossing is often compared to Times Square in New York City due to its bustling atmosphere and bright lights. It's a sight to behold, where time seems to stand still amidst the bustling movement.
A View from the Shibuya Sky Tower
But the adventure didn’t stop there. We ascended to the top of the Shibuya Sky Tower, where Tokyo sprawled beneath us in all its glory. The view was breathtaking, a perfect reminder of the city's vastness and beauty, offering a moment of reflection and awe. The Shibuya Sky Tower offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Tokyo, allowing you to see iconic landmarks like Tokyo Tower and even Mount Fuji on clear days.
A Poignant Visit to the Hachikō Memorial Statue
A visit to the Hachikō Memorial Statue added a poignant touch to our day. This symbol of loyalty and undying friendship reminded us of the deeper connections that bind us, transcending the hustle and bustle of city life. Hachikō was a loyal Akita dog who waited at Shibuya Station every day for his owner, even after his owner passed away. His story has become a symbol of loyalty and devotion in Japan.
