Avignon France Travel Guide – Sur le Pont d’Avignon …
As you explore Avignon, you will realize that large parts of the town and numerous buildings have been declared UNESCO World Heritage sites, which is not something you’ll come across every day.
Their famous bridge and palace are the first ones on the UNESCO’s list, but there are many other protected sites as well, including the Avignon Cathedral, the Museum of the Petit Palais and the protective walls leading up to the bridge.
Previously mentioned museum looks like a giant fortress and houses an impressive collection of paintings and sculptures from the Renaissance and Middle Ages.
Did you know that between the years 1309 and 1377, Avignon, was the seat of the papacy, not Rome? The popes who lived in Avignon ordered the construction of the palace you can visit today, as well as fortification walls that still surround the center of the city.
